In a recent English lesson we were reading Chapter 5 from Frankenstein, which had some complex language and ideas. There is a particular section where Frankenstein exclaims how his creature is ‘a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived’. There were many questions about the creature and the language used to describe him. However, the most interesting discussion happened around Dante and what that meant.

The students were engaged in the subject, especially when I explained who he was in brief, but they wanted to know more. This is where I encouraged the students to use the technology at their fingertips. I was mindful it is only a Year 7 class and modelled on my interactive board how to search for something accurately, economically and efficiently. The students took this information and researched Dante, producing a fact file on the IPad, using Slides, which was then shared with me on Google Classroom.

I know that this immediate learning could not have taken place without the technology we have available in the classroom. It has encouraged curiosity and independence in my students and some of them have now gone away to find The Divine Comedy to try to read some of it.
